BB Chung King and the Buddaheads

The fact is, I mourn the death of the ultimate blues-rock virtuoso, Stevie Ray Vaughn, every time I hear those magical fingers plucking out a tune. The man just knew his way around a fret board, and absolutely defines what the genre of blues-rock really is. And yet, I can’t help but smile even wider when BB Chung King’s guitar licks cross my path. Alan Mirikitani (BB's real name) and his band the Buddaheads have brought back the essence of blues rock that even current guitar prodigy Kenny Wayne Shepherd hasn't quite yet conquered (high praise, considering Kenny has been my favorite musician for the last seven years). The best part is that, while the Buddaheads have definite tastes of Vaughn, Shepherd and the likes adding spice to their music, the California band is indeed a distinct flavor all their own.

No matter how fast or slow the music rolls, no matter how heavy or light the power flows, every last melody develops from a blues base. An experienced blues ear quickly catches...
